von | Okt 11, 2010 | WeeklySnap

4 – 8 October Bernd was on fire, sending updates live from the OSMC in Nuremberg.
Beginning on the first half of the first day, he reported on all that’s new with Business Process Addons, including its integration into Icinga Web announced by speaker and developer Bernd Strößenreuther. Then he covered Dr. Matthias Münch’s introduction to Torrus, a high performance SNMP plugin for Nagios and Sebastian Harl’s explanation of RRDCacheD capabilities to reduce disk I/O and crashes. From there Bernd gave us a peek into how Tobias Redel pimped up monitoring with Icinga, LConf, PNP Graph, Event DB and Business Process Addon, while peeping into Java monitoring and troubleshooting with JMX and proactive monitoring with Nagios at Thales, the largest Dutch defence company.
Just before heading off to the evening dinner and drinks, Bernd touched on Sebastian Lederer’s Windows desktop application monitoring with Auto IT, and gave us the latest from NSClient++ as per speaker and sole developer Michael Medin. To end the first day, he visited 2 monitoring program speeches – OpenNMS, the world’s first enterprise grade network management application platform developed under the open source model, and Icinga which made their latest release on the day as well as a new mobile interface equipped with live demo.
To start the 2nd day, Bernd covered Wolfgang Barth’s detailed introduction to Merlin and Stig Sandbeck Mathisen’s into Munin. He went on to Martin Grauel’s optimised logging with Syslog-ng and Puppet’s link to monitoring as explained by Birger Schmidt.

After lunch, Bernd offered a final review
of legal pitfalls in the use of open source software per Dr. Hendrik Schöttle and distributed monitoring scenarios by Martin Hefter with Nagios, Nag(ix)SC and NSCA. Finally, he looked at MD Livestatus and Mulitsite for the management of multiple instances and the last monitoring program of the conference –Python based Schinken, presented by Gerhard Laußer. All in all, Bernd gave ample evidence that the OSMC 2010 was two highly varied and informative days.
