Mai 2012.

Das nächste Icinga/Nagios Training in Nürnberg findet übrigens vom 07. – 11. Mai statt.

Weekly Snap: Icinga Training, Testing with Selenium & Apprenticeships

camera Weekly Snap: Icinga Training, Testing with Selenium & Apprenticeships13 – 17 February offered something from every corner of the office, from new apprenticeship openings and Icinga training courses to programming and time management tips.

Bernd began by calling out to aspiring apprentices to join our consulting and managed services teams.

Ansgar then tested Icinga Web with the help of Selenium IDE to deal with dynamic IDs and Gunnar shared his newest programming recommendation – Lua.

From the events team, Markus announced our next Icinga monitoring course in Dusseldorf on 19 – 23 March, while Pamela reminded early birds to hurry for their tickets to the OSDC on 25 -26 April.

Following on, Ronny alerted sys admins to dkim filters to a recent segfault error that has arisen in combination with libmilter 1.0.1 and versions before 8.14.4-1.

Tobias took on the issue of time management and IT work to close the week.

Weekly Snap: From Cluster IPs & Intermapper Tips to Virtual Windows XP Mode & New Course Venues

camera Weekly Snap: From Cluster IPs & Intermapper Tips to Virtual Windows XP Mode & New Course Venues19 – 23 December bid all a Merry Christmas, with handy ideas for network monitoring, simplifying cluster source IP, using Windows XP on Windows 7 and new training course locations.

Martin S started by sharing his secret for fast network troubleshootingIntermapper displays information on the structure, status, data transfer volumes, available bandwidth and potential network problems in real-time on a network map, via SNMP.

Markus N then announced new NETWAYS training venues for 2012. Alongside courses in Nuremberg, “Icinga Availability Monitoring” is now offered in Düsseldorf and “Puppet Configuration Management” in Zurich. “Nagios Availability Monitoring” and “SLA Reporting” classes will now be held at a second Nuremberg venue, at the Park Inn Hotel. What hasn’t changed however, is our training course content and concept – intensive knowledge transfer in small groups, in a casual and hands-on environment.

Following on, Ansgar explained how to run old programs on Windows 7 in XP mode with the help of Windows Virtual PC. As long as the hardware can support the extra virtualization load, both Windows XP mode and Virtual PC can be easily downloaded and installed, alongside the desired, old programs. Thanks to the “seamless mode” and ability to access Windows 7 files, this virtual solution is makes using older applications with the XP look and feel, a breeze.

As a final Xmas contribution, Carsten showed how to change the source address of a cluster with Pacemaker. As he found the existing OCF Resource agent script, known as IPsrcaddr to be somewhat unreliable, Carsten wrote and shared his own. Once his resource agent, IPsrcaddr2 is filed in the right place, configuration of Corosync/Pacemaker a one-liner. It can then be used to set the source IP address of Icinga checks. This is handy in a two-node cluster, as the cluster IP can be used as opposed to setting both IPs in the firewall or NRPE daemons.

Weekly Snap: CPU Limit, MOTP, Typed Arrays & Training Courses in 2012

camera Weekly Snap: CPU Limit, MOTP, Typed Arrays & Training Courses in 201219 – 23 September tried new tools such as CPUlimit.sh, mobile one-time passwords, and typed arrays in java script, while preparing for a municipal IT conference and training courses in 2012.

Birger began the week with his discovery of cpulimit.sh, a tool to cool down his over active MacBook Pro. With a 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, it would often go into “jet mode” when indexing for Spotlight or running the video player, making a lot of noise in the process. On one hand he can easily switch off his graphics card with gfxCardStatus, however to reduce his CPU and energy consumption (thereby saving his battery and hearing) he found cpulimit.sh and a variant for those running on Lion.

Following on, Marcus H showed how to implement single-use password authentication with MOTP, the Mobile One Time Password project. He gave an example with an Apache module and an iOS client. First he compiled mod_authn_otp and installed dependencies per the MOTP project wiki. The module is treated like a normal basic auth in the Apache config. Here, a user file is given, where the corresponding user and their ‘secrets’ and the related PINs are specified. This file must be writeable by the Apache user, so that the module can set a timestamp. In this way, the token given to the user is valid only for a fixed time period and they will not be repeatedly asked for a new token. For the client, Marcus downloaded mOTP from the App Store. He recommended the guides on the project’s wiki for other operating systems such as Python.

From the development team, Jannis then had a look at low-level memory access in java script with typed arrays. The new data types, array buffer and typed arrays are used to access binary data effectively. Comparing the performance of internal arrays to the float 32 array, he concluded that float 32 array is worth trying for large amounts of data.

Bernd looked forward to the upcoming Kommunale and its premiere IT sub-conference 2011 in Nuremberg on 19 – 20 October. With a special focus on digital information and communication technologies in the municipality, the program covers cloud computing, DMS systems, Green IT and more. NETWAYS will join, with Bernd presenting on “IT Monitoring & Management Systems in Public Administration”. For help with tickets, contact our team at info@netways.de

Looking ahead, Markus N announced the NETWAYS course timetable for the start of 2012: Nagios Availability Monitoring on 16 – 19 January and Icinga Availability Monitoring on 16 – 20 January. Class sizes are restricted to 10 attendees for intensive learning, whilst allowing for discussion to consolidate course material. All-inclusive packages offer just that: accommodation (also on the course eve), catering, notebook hire, wlan internet, as well as a dinner and drinks event. If you are looking for tailored training however, the NETWAYS training team also offers workshops with customised material, run on-site at your office. More information is available at the NETWAYS training center.

Weekly Snap: Introducing CouchDB & Nginx, Offering Dev Job & NETWAYS Training

camera Weekly Snap: Introducing CouchDB & Nginx, Offering Dev Job & NETWAYS Training11 – 15 July introduced CouchDB, new ways of using Nginx, a part-time job opening and our training course schedule for September.

Christoph put a spin on the popular Nginx for use as a load-balanced image converter. As the first step, he showed how Nginx can distribute incoming queries to other web servers. He defined an upstream server and vhost to check for the requested image on all servers and to generate it in a shared directory when it is not found. In the second step, he used vhost’s image filter and security check for image optimisation. SSL and other image formats can be easily integrated, making this a handy tool but most of all scalable, stable and (with a bit of additional effort) also redundant.

Following on Gunnar introduced CouchDB. The Erlang, doc based DBMS has been packaged for most Linux distributions, and thanks to its HTTP based REST interface, can be accessed by most HTTP clients. With a simple UI for admin and database editing, it differs from relational DBMS in that no database schemas in the form of tables need to be defined upon DB setup. Instead, JSON formatted documents can be directly stored in the DB. Documents are accessed via _id, and views can be defined to enable access via other fields. In using an internal binary tree CouchDB can offer performance comparable with indexes in relational DBMS. Information on replication, document validation and more can be found on the Apache project page and in the online book “CouchDB: The Definitive Guide”.

Marius continued to fortify the development team, announcing a position for a student with Python and UML modelling experience. Uni students available to work 80 hours a month, and are interested in working on open source projects with a focus on Python, object modelling in UML based on EMF, document oriented databases, XML and JSON interfaces are welcome to apply at jobs@netways.de or find more info in our jobs area.

Ending the week, Rebecca gave a rundown of upcoming NETWAYS training courses in Icinga (19 – 23 Sep), Nagios (19 – 22 Sep), Puppet (13 – 15 Sep) and SLA Reporting with Jasper (28 – 29 Sep). Thanks to our innumerable consulting projects, we have much practical experience in dealing with highly varied environments and installations to share through our courses. These are designed for intensive learning with small groups, and many opportunities to share ideas and experience between attendees. For more, see our training area.

Weekly Snap: CeBIT Reflections, MySQL Slides & a New NETWAYS Training Year

camera Weekly Snap: CeBIT Reflections, MySQL Slides & a New NETWAYS Training Year14 – 18 March closed the chapter on CeBIT 2011 and opened the NETWAYS training year.

Rebecca announced the start of the NETWAYS school year with three training courses: ‘Monitoring with Nagios’ (22 -25 March) ‘Puppet Configuration Management’ (24-26 May), and ‘Nagios SLA Reporting with Jasper Reports’ (28 – 29 September). All come with accommodation, catering, course laptop and materials plus a small dinner and drinks event on the 2nd last day for casual networking. Should more individualized training be called for, NETWAYS offers customized workshops and online courses in partnership with the Linux Academy are also available for learning at your own pace and place. More information can be found at the NETWAYS Training Center: http://www.netways.de/de/units/training/

Bernd then shared his ‘MySQL in Large Environments’ presentation from CeBIT for download, following Julian’s on ‘Open Source IT Management’. On the side, he invited readers to post if they use any of the new MySQL features such as partitioning or semi-synchronous replication.

In theme, Manuela reflected on the big CeBIT just past, with more than 4200 companies from over 70 countries and a collective, annual purchasing volume of over €50 billion. Exhibiting in the Open Source Park, Manuela and the rest of the NETWAYS team enjoyed the many good discussions with passersby, where Icinga and its new version 1.30 in comparison to Nagios featured alongside particular interest in our Hosting and Managed Services offering. As a final CeBIT farewell, she shared a live stream of Philip Deneus’ presentation on ‘Monitoring with Icinga’ and a few snapshots of the few days in Hannover. Thanks go to Pluspol for arranging the Open Source Park, where we hope to see you again 6-10 March 2012!

Weekly Snap: Debian v6.0, MySQL Features, Jasper Training & Cloud Expo Europe

camera Weekly Snap: Debian v6.0, MySQL Features, Jasper Training & Cloud Expo Europe7 – 11 February got excited about the new Debian v6.0 release, new features in MySQL 5.5 and the upcoming Jasper Reporting training course – not to mention Julian’s visit to the Cloud Expo Europe.

Julian celebrated the release of Debian v 6.0 (codenamed Squeeze) and its wealth of new packages and software versions. As annouced by the Debian release team, these included Apache 2.2.16, PHP 5.3.3, MySQL 5.1.49 and Asterisk 1.6.2.9, but also the latest Nagios and now Icinga too. “Technical preview” GNU/kFreeBSD was introduced, allowing Debian to be booted with a FreeBSD kernel.

He then went on to share his “ITSM with Open Source Software” presentation he made at the Cloud Expo Europe in London with slides to download.

Bernd started a new series titled MySQL New Features, with a post on semi-synchronous replication. An alternative to the default asynchronous replication, it solves the problem of transactions being lost when a master fails. Instead of the master simply writing changes to local bin logs and disregarding the processing done by the slaves, semi-synchronous replication ensures the status “committed” is only achieved when the transaction has been processed by at least one slave. InnoDB is required for its use and the ACID criteria must be met. For admins, he offers the Rpl_semi_sync_master_no_tx variable for details on the transactions still open, and not committed on a slave.

Finally, Rebecca announced the upcoming training course on Nagios SLA Reporting with Jasper. The two day workshop on 12 -13 April will introduce students to the concept of reporting, dive into the installation and operation of iReport and Jasper Server, demonstrate their integration to Nagios( NDO) or Icinga (IDO) and other data sources such as ticketing systems and RRD databases. Students will also learn to design, generate and distribute dynamic reports. Registration is open, and more information is available at our training centre.
